Age Representation -

The clip consist of two different age groups, one being the older generation and one being the younger generation.  It starts with an establishing shot of the location(a bar) where they are celebrating a birthday.

We are shown a conversation between two men who are seated away from the crowd around the bar and generally in the background which consisted of the younger generation. This suggest that they are mature or even suspicion as to why they are not involved and seated away. The camera work emphases on the fact they are seated away having a civilized conversation whilst still being able to see the younger generation, in the background dancing to the loud music playing and drinking. Reverse shot was used to show the seriousness of the conversation between the two men whilst seeing a close up of both their faces and expression/reaction to the dialogue.Also was stable camera movement to reflect their characteristics, the topic on technology emphases on the fact they are old. Also how the music in the background is really faint when the camera is based on the two men shows the separation between the younger generation and the older generation.

In the following scene, the camera follows one of men to his work environment where we are introduced to his workforce via a high angle shot suggest they are doing something secretive and to give the audience a sense of someones watching over them. Unlike the previous scene where we were shown a conversation between him and someone of the same age, he seems surrounded by a younger crowd or workforce who seem more calm and laid back. He didn't seem involved nor impressed by the jokes his workforce made about the situation. This links back to how different, they are but can still work together.

Overall the representations are positive, as it just showed people of two different ages from a different light. The younger generation were at a gathering or a party so the way they were behaving was realistic and expected. Whereas the older men were having a serious conversation at pub which is a public place who were not there for the party but there due to a matter of their own.

Shameless

Class - I believe that the audience of shameless fit into the C1 demographic. I think those in the A and B categories would not be able to relate or understand the humour and themes of the show and crazy lifestyle the the characters live.

Gender - I believe that the audience of Shameless are both genders because the representation of both sexes is strong in the show

Lifestyle - I believe most of the audience of Shameless have at some point come from a working class background or know of someone so have experienced or witnessed some of the themes presented in the show.

Age - I believe that the audience of Shameless fit into the 17-25 age group. I think the language and sexual content that the show contains makes it not suitable for the younger audience. Although some of the characters in the show are young.

Ethnicity - I believe that the audience of Shameless fit into various ethnic categories. The show has people who are White, black, mixed race and Asian but the main family who the show is based on are white. It is a realistic representation of the multi cultural country, we live in.

In the show, the children are portrayed in an unpleasant manner, as one of the children hits their own father and knocks to the floor and the children seem quite amused by, showing the children are disrespectful. The clothes, the children are wearing can be considered to be chavy to build on the working class image.

The shot where the children are surrounded in a circle looking over at their dad who is drunk and lying on the floor can be seen to show, how close they are as siblings and with the shot being high angle, suggest the children are in charge which is different from what we expect in a family.

From the environment and the building, you can tell they live in a council estate as there is a park which is in between houses. This is another representation of working class lifestyle and surroundings. The next scene with the fire and police intervening of what seems like a gathering of the community, once again can be seen as a negative representation of working class.

Eastenders - Representations of social class

Eastenders -

Throughout the extract representations of genders are illustrated through various elements such as editing and sound. In the Eastenders extract, they all speak with a strong cockney accent suggesting they are working class from their use of short sentences. Also from the way they are dressed very casually and up to date with the latest trends and fashion. The way they are all out in the square suggest everyone knows each other and are tight knit community. Also the age is very interesting as they all seem fairly young adults or teenagers, mothers with children, young fathers and then the old people who have been in the area for ages which i think is quite common in areas where working class people live. 

The next factor which displays representations is through mis en scene, expressions play a key role because as soon the clip starts we the fear in both the girl and the boys face in the garage when the other girl walks in, a low angle is used to capture her expression of fear leading to us to feel sympathetic towards her because she had just witnessed something she probably hoped she wouldn’t ever have to.  Its set in a very natural environment however it focuses attention on the male character and the friend which is probably a common situation in every day to day life so i feel a lot females as well as males will be able to relate to that particular scene and the emotion the girl who walked in was feeling.  Then we introduced to another couple where we continually see male characters illustrate dominance, in this case the male characters seem very aggressive to his girlfriend/fiancé in the way he speaks to her and his body language which is a lot like what we would expect in day to day life. During these conversations, the camera is facing the male character to show he is the dominant one in the relationship.  The locations we see in the clip, determines the representations of social class such as the laundrette where the locals gather and commute, outside their houses gathering around the square, the garage, the cafe and the pub where the locals come together. All the locations emphasis on the social class especially with the launderette with them not having one in their homes and the pub, it seemed the locals all worked a 9-5 and will gather up to gossip whilst having a few drinks definiately emphasizes on the life style of the working class.Once again suggesting how close the people around the area are with each other and confined in each other for advice and help. We also hear a lot diagetic sound of the wind, other talking, car engines so it gives a sense of reality which is what most tv dramas tend to use. 

Finally i would the representations of social class is displayed through camera work. For example at the start we see a lot close up between the three characters to emphasis on their expressions so the audience could get involved with the character and show some sort of significance of the three characters in the situation. We see a few over the shoulder shots, especially the conversation between the girl and the boy in the cafe where he is asking her for help. Another over the shoulder shot is in the laundrette between the couple where its slightly at a higher angle when facing the male character to show he is dominant in the relationship. Panning is also used to show the environments whilst capturing expressions of certain characters significant to the story line.
